New design concepts driven by user needs push storage ring based lightsources towards physical boundaries limiting the fundamental parameters of the electron bunch, i.e., particle trap. Transverse limits are reached by Diffraction Limited Storage Rings (DLSR), whereas the longitudinal limits become accessible by the BESSY VSR concept. These limits of future sources as well as a new bunch separation scheme, an optimisations option for existing 3rd generation lightsources, currently under investigation at BESSY II, will be presented.
