On Microbunching Phenomena in Accelerator facilities

  • Caused by bunch's own electromagnetic fields, the spatial modulation of the bunch distribution, named Microbunching,  is a prominent phenomena in accelerator facilities. In many cases, Microbunching is launched by the initial shot noise of the bunch. Given suitable conditions, it develops a positiv feedback loop in an Interplay with the accelerator components. This positive feedback  leads to a very fast increase of Microbunching amplitude, thus it gives rise to an instability,  the so called Microbunching instability (MBI).  In the presentation, I discuss , the  occurence , dedicated generation, amplification and also suppression and usage of MBI in accelerator facilities.
